Layer feeding must support two different jobs: growing a pullet to the correct body weight and maintaining egg production after lay begins. Do not move underweight pullets forward too early
Age alone does not prove readiness for the next ration or light stimulation. Weigh a representative sample weekly and compare it with the correct strain objective. Underweight, uneven pullets may struggle to reach stable production. Overweight pullets can also perform poorly and cost more to maintain.
Use birds selected from several parts of the house. Record average weight, the lightest and heaviest birds, mortality and the percentage close to the average. Investigate uneven feed access, brooding, disease, crowding and drinker problems when uniformity falls.
How much feed should layers eat?
There is no universal daily amount. Intake changes with strain, age, body weight, temperature, feed energy, production level, egg size and housing. Published breeder intake tables are the correct starting reference.
During hot Nigerian weather, hens may eat less while nutrient demand remains high. Keep water cool and available, improve ventilation and avoid diluting feed. Sudden restriction can reduce egg output and shell quality.

Persistent thin shells require investigation of age, intake, heat stress, disease, water, mineral balance and egg size.
Feed form and particle size
Chicks need a feed form they can consume easily. Older pullets and layers need a reasonably uniform particle distribution. Excess fines encourage sorting and waste; very coarse separation can allow birds to select ingredients. Keep feeders adjusted and avoid filling troughs too deeply.
Water is part of the feeding programme
Restricted or dirty water reduces feed intake and egg production. Check flow, height, cleanliness and daily use. A sudden rise or fall in water consumption may be an early warning of heat, leaks or illness.
Changing from one feed to another
Confirm the flock has reached the required stage and weight. Avoid long periods without feed. Keep the change orderly and observe intake, droppings and behaviour. If the new feed smells rancid, appears mouldy or causes a sharp intake change, stop and investigate the batch.
