Layer feed conversion ratio measures how much feed a flock uses to produce eggs. The clearest comparison is kilograms of feed per kilogram of egg mass. Farmers may also track kilograms of feed per dozen eggs, but the two values must never be compared as if they are the same measure.
Feed consumed (kg) ÷ egg mass produced (kg). A lower value usually means better feed efficiency when flocks are compared at similar ages and under the same system.

How to calculate layer FCR
Record feed consumed and egg output for the same period. Do not use feed purchased if some remains in the store.
Egg mass (kg) = number of eggs × average egg weight in grams ÷ 1,000.
Egg-mass FCR = feed consumed in kg ÷ egg mass in kg.
Worked example
A flock consumes 120 kg of feed and produces 1,000 eggs averaging 60 g.
- Egg mass = 1,000 × 60 ÷ 1,000 = 60 kg.
- FCR = 120 ÷ 60 = 2.00 kg feed per kg egg mass.
If the farmer prefers feed per dozen, 1,000 eggs equal 83.33 dozen, so feed per dozen is 120 ÷ 83.33 = 1.44 kg. Label the result clearly as kg feed per dozen eggs.

What is a good layer FCR?
No single figure applies to every flock. FCR changes with strain, age, stage of lay, egg weight, mortality, housing, climate, feed specification and measurement period. Compare your flock with the performance guide for the exact commercial strain and with your own previous cycles on the same basis.
Breeder values are objectives under specified conditions, not guarantees. Use the relevant Hy-Line, Bovans or other supplier guide for the birds actually purchased.
Why layer FCR becomes worse
- Falling rate of lay while feed intake remains high.
- Feed wastage, overfilled troughs or rodents.
- Wrong feed phase or a poorly balanced ration.
- Heat stress, poor ventilation or unreliable water.
- Disease, parasites or weak vaccination and biosecurity control.
- Low egg weight, broken eggs or unrecorded floor eggs.
- Excessive mortality or too many unproductive hens.
- Inaccurate feed inventory, bird count or egg records.
Improve FCR without harming the flock
Match feed to production stage
Use a complete layer ration formulated for the flock’s age, intake and production stage. Do not dilute finished feed with maize, bran or other ingredients without reformulation. Dilution can reduce amino acids, minerals and vitamins per kilogram consumed.
Protect water intake
Egg production falls quickly when water is restricted. Check drinker height, flow, cleanliness and daily consumption. During hot weather, provide cool clean water and improve airflow.

Reduce feed losses
Adjust trough height, avoid overfilling, repair leaking silos or bags and control rodents. Record spoiled or discarded feed separately from consumed feed.
Maintain a stable lighting programme
Sudden changes in day length or light intensity can disturb production. Follow the breeder’s lighting programme and avoid accidental night lighting or prolonged power interruptions.
Find non-laying birds and health problems
FCR worsens when hens continue eating but stop producing. Investigate sudden production drops, pale combs, diarrhoea, respiratory signs, parasites, egg binding and poor body condition. Veterinary diagnosis is safer than treating a flock from one symptom.
FCR and egg quality are different measures
A low FCR does not automatically prove strong shells, deep yolk colour or good albumen quality. Those traits depend on nutrition, age, disease, storage and other factors. Report FCR beside rate of lay, egg weight, cracked eggs, mortality and feed cost.
Track feed cost per kilogram of egg mass
Feed cost per kg egg mass = total feed cost ÷ egg mass produced.
This measure combines feed price with flock output. Date-stamp Nigerian prices and keep the calculation editable. A lower bag price may not reduce production cost if the flock eats more feed or produces fewer eggs.

Common mistakes
- Calling a higher FCR an improvement. Lower normally means greater efficiency.
- Mixing feed per dozen with feed per kilogram of egg mass.
- Using total feed delivered instead of consumed feed.
- Ignoring rejected or unrecorded eggs.
- Comparing pullets, peak-production hens and older layers directly.
- Changing several supplements or medicines at once without a diagnosis.
