Gumboro disease, also called infectious bursal disease (IBD), is a highly contagious viral disease of young chickens. It damages the bursa of Fabricius, an immune organ where B lymphocytes develop, and can leave surviving birds vulnerable to secondary infections and poor vaccine responses.
There is no medicine that cures IBDV infection. A reliable response depends on diagnosis, supportive flock management, biosecurity and a vaccination programme designed for the farm’s maternal-antibody levels and circulating virus strains.

What is Gumboro disease?
Infectious bursal disease is caused by infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), a non-enveloped double-stranded RNA virus. Disease-producing serotype 1 strains range from subclinical and classical strains to very virulent strains.
The virus targets immature B lymphocytes in the cloacal bursa, also called the bursa of Fabricius. Damage to these cells can suppress immunity, reduce responses to other vaccines and increase susceptibility to secondary infections.
IBDV spreads in faeces and can move between poultry houses on footwear, clothing, crates, equipment, insects and other contaminated materials. The virus is stable in the environment, which makes elimination from contaminated premises difficult.
Which birds are most at risk?
Clinical disease is most common at 3–6 weeks of age, after maternally derived antibodies decline and while the bursa contains many immature B cells. Infection before three weeks may be subclinical but can still cause important, long-lasting immunosuppression.
Age alone does not confirm IBD. The outcome also depends on the virus strain, breed, immune status, vaccination history and level of maternal antibodies.
Signs of Gumboro disease in chickens
After an incubation period of about 3–4 days, affected birds may show:
- sudden listlessness and depression;
- ruffled feathers and a crouched posture;
- reduced feed and water intake;
- watery diarrhoea and soiled vent feathers;
- vent picking or inflammation around the cloaca;
- dehydration;
- incoordination, trembling or severe weakness; and
- a rapid rise and fall in illness and deaths across the flock.
Some IBDV strains cause few obvious signs but still damage the bursa and suppress immunity. Poor growth, delayed market weight, secondary infections or weak vaccine responses may be the first practical evidence of a subclinical problem.

Why symptoms alone are not enough
Watery droppings, weakness and mortality also occur with coccidiosis, bacterial septicaemia, toxins, feed problems and other viral diseases. White material in droppings may simply be normal urates. Gumboro disease should not be diagnosed from diarrhoea colour or one photograph.

How Gumboro disease is diagnosed
A veterinarian or poultry diagnostic laboratory may use:
- the flock’s age, clinical pattern, vaccination history and mortality curve;
- postmortem examination of the cloacal bursa and other tissues;
- microscopic assessment for lymphocyte depletion;
- RT-PCR to detect the IBDV genome;
- virus isolation; and
- serology, interpreted carefully because young chicks may carry maternal antibodies.
The bursa may become enlarged, oedematous or haemorrhagic during acute disease and later become small and atrophied. Normal age-related bursal involution, vaccination, stress, Marek’s disease, inclusion body hepatitis and aflatoxicosis may complicate interpretation.

Young birds, rapid spread, depression, watery diarrhoea, dehydration or rising mortality.
Limit movement, separate equipment, strengthen entry hygiene and manage dead birds safely.
Record age, vaccination, mortality and clinical signs. Arrange fresh diagnostic samples or postmortem examination.
Use laboratory findings to guide flock management and correct future vaccination and biosecurity gaps.
What to do during a suspected outbreak
- Contact a poultry veterinarian or diagnostic service promptly.
- Restrict movement of birds, people and equipment between houses.
- Use dedicated footwear, clothing, tools and cleaning equipment.
- Provide clean water, suitable complete feed, dry litter and an appropriate temperature.
- Record daily illness, mortality, feed intake and water intake.
- Remove dead birds promptly and dispose of them according to local rules.
- Clean drinkers and prevent faecal contamination of feed and water.
- Follow professional instructions for sample collection and postmortem submission.
Treatment and supportive management
There is no specific treatment that eliminates IBDV. Garlic, aloe vera, turmeric, apple cider vinegar and other home remedies have not been shown to cure Gumboro disease. They must not delay diagnosis, biosecurity or professional care.
Supportive flock management focuses on access to water, appropriate feed, suitable temperature and reduced stress. Severely affected birds may need individually managed fluid therapy under veterinary direction. Communal water medication can be unreliable because the sickest birds often drink less.
Antibiotics do not act against IBDV. They should only be considered when a veterinarian identifies or strongly suspects a treatable secondary bacterial infection. In food-producing birds, every medicine must comply with the authorised label, local regulations and egg or meat withdrawal requirements.
Vaccination: why there is no universal day
Vaccination is central to IBD control, but “vaccinate every flock at 14 days” is unsafe advice. Maternally derived antibodies can neutralise some live vaccines if they are given too early. Waiting too long can leave chicks exposed to field virus.
The correct programme depends on:
- maternal-antibody levels and how quickly they decline;
- the vaccine platform and strain;
- local IBDV strains and farm history;
- breeder vaccination and chick source;
- route of administration and water quality; and
- whether the flock is broilers, layers or breeders.
Live attenuated vaccines may be delivered by drinking water, eye drop or injection. Vector and immune-complex vaccines may be administered in ovo or at hatch. Breeder vaccination helps transfer maternal antibodies to chicks. A veterinarian or poultry-health professional should design the programme using local disease evidence and, where available, serology.

Biosecurity and environmental control
IBDV is resistant in the environment, so control requires more than routine surface cleaning. A farm plan should include:
- all-in, all-out flock management where practical;
- thorough removal of organic matter before disinfection;
- a disinfectant and contact time appropriate for IBDV;
- dry litter and well-maintained drinker systems;
- controlled entry of people, vehicles, crates and equipment;
- clean-to-dirty work order between poultry houses;
- rodent, insect and wild-bird control; and
- adequate downtime and review after an outbreak.
Disinfection alone may have limited success on heavily contaminated premises. Vaccination, breeder immunity, farm hygiene and movement control must work together.

Can Gumboro disease be cured?

Does white diarrhoea prove Gumboro disease?
