Feed consumption and FCR are measured results, not fixed strain promises. Oba Marshall intake changes with age, body weight, feed density, temperature, health, sex, wastage and market date.
One Nigerian unrestricted research setting reported about 4.3 kg of feed per Marshall bird by 56 days. Use that only as an initial planning reference and replace it with your farm records as the batch progresses.
Worked bag estimate
For 100 birds at 4.3 kg each, base feed is 430 kg. Adding 5% planning allowance gives 451.5 kg, equal to 19 full 25 kg bags. This is a worked example, not a promise that every flock will consume that amount.

Measure consumed feed
Feed consumed = opening stock + feed received − closing stock − measured waste.
Record purchased, issued, returned, spoiled and visibly wasted feed separately. Bags bought are not the same as feed eaten.
Calculate FCR
FCR = feed consumed ÷ live-weight gain.
Use the same date range for feed and weight. Account for mortality consistently. The Poultry FCR Calculator uses mortality-adjusted live-weight gain.
Why FCR worsens
- Feed spillage, rodents or inaccurate stock records.
- Poor water access or hot water.
- Heat stress and weak ventilation.
- Disease, mortality or poor chick quality.
- Low-quality or inappropriate feed.
- Overcrowding and feeder competition.
- Keeping birds longer while growth slows.
Use cost per kilogram gain
Feed cost per kg gain = FCR × feed cost per kg. A lower bag price is not automatically cheaper production. Connect the result to the broiler cost calculator and the profit calculator.
