Cost per placed bird versus sold bird
Cost per placed bird divides total cost by all chicks purchased. Cost per surviving or sold bird divides the same total by birds that reach sale. The second figure exposes the financial effect of mortality.
Do not hide fixed costs
Small farms often omit family labour, rent, equipment wear and transport. Cash may not leave the farm that day, but the resource still has a cost. Keep cash cost and full economic cost as separate figures.
